The Mass Save Program

Mass Save is an energy efficiency program for Massachusetts residents and businesses. Its goal is to help people reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills by offering rebates and incentives. One such rebate is available to eligible homeowners who install heat pumps to heat and cool their homes. Energy-efficient heat pumps help to reduce carbon emissions across the Bay State while also helping homeowners save on energy bills.

At J&J Heating and Air Conditioning Inc., we pride ourselves on being a trustworthy and efficient Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network member. Our highly skilled and experienced team will install the perfect heat pump for your home, allowing you to receive your rebate and keep your home comfortable year round.

Heat Pump Rebate Amount

The amount of your Mass Save rebate will depend on the size of the heat pump (measured in tonnage) and whether or not it will be the sole source of climate control in your home. As of January 1st, 2026, the rebate is calculated as follows:

  • Whole-Home: $2,650 per ton, capped at $8,500.
  • Partial-Home: $1,125 per ton, capped at $8,500.

Whole-home refers to homes using the new heat pump as the sole source of heating and cooling, while partial-home refers to homes where the new heat pump is supplementing an existing heating or cooling system.

Rebate Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for the rebate, certain requirements must be met, including:

  • The home must be occupied full-time during the winter season.
  • Residential customers must be replacing oil, propane, or electric resistance heating systems, whereas Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil are the Mass Save Electric Sponsors.
  • Residential customers must be replacing natural gas heating systems where Berkshire Gas, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil is the Mass Save Natural Gas Sponsor
  • Equipment must be ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate certified and listed on the Mass Save Heat Pump Qualified Products List.
  • Equipment must be new and installed to replace oil, propane, natural gas, or electric baseboard (resistance) as the primary heating system.
  • For partial-home rebates, an integrated control from the Mass Save Integrated Control Qualified Product List must be installed for heating zones where propane, oil, or natural gas will remain in use.
  • For whole-home rebates, a mass save energy assessment must be completed before installation and homes must be sufficiently weatherized prior to heat pump installation. Additionally, a whole-home heat pump verification form must be completed and signed.
  • Basic rebates are available to customers who are NOT displacing fossil fuel or electric resistance heat in their home and installed on August 1, 2025 or after. These scenarios include, but are not limited to:
        • Updating an existing heat pump or central air conditioning system
        • Installing a heat pump in a previously unconditioned space (e.g., new addition)
        • Installing a heat pump in a home that is not occupied in the winter (e.g., summer home)
